Your role
To create a plan that works for you, you’ll need to give your financial adviser as much information as you can. It’s important for them to understand your situation, what you hope to achieve and how much riskRiskIn its simplest sense, risk is the variability of returns. Investments with greater inherent risk must provide higher expected yields if investors are to be attracted to them. Risk can take many forms, but a major one is valuation risk – paying too much for an asset. Once your adviser makes a recommendation, make sure that you fully understand it. Read everything closely, ask questions and check even the smallest details.
Your financial adviser’s role
The role of your adviser is to offer you impartial advice, based on their close understanding of what’s suitable for your needs.
Working closely with you, they will assess your goals and attitudes to risk-taking. Drawing on their skills and expertise, they will recommend solutions that match your criteria. It’s their job to explain the recommendation they make so that you’re fully aware of what’s happening with your money.
Once you’ve agreed on a plan, they’ll set up your portfolioPortfolioThe collection of investment holdings of a particular investor usually with reference to its composition ie the mix of different classes of securities, such as bonds, property, shares and cash, or if in a single asset class, the mix of different sectors and stocks.. But the investment process doesn’t end there. If you choose, your adviser will monitor the performance of your portfolio over time, giving you regular updates and recommending any changes that may be necessary as your needs change.
